Jack Skellington (The Nightmare Before Christmas)
Jack Skellington is the main character of Disney’s The Nightmare Before Christmas. He acts as the primary figurehead of Halloween, but yearns for something more fulfilling. Upon stumbling across the holiday of Christmas, Jack takes it upon himself to put his own spin on the holiday.
Jack’s main defining feature is his yearning for a higher purpose. Jack has effectively achieved all that there is to achieve from the perspective of Halloween. Every year is spookier than the last, and he never fails to scare a single victim. However, much like Saitama from One Punch Man, this success and subsequent lack of challenge leaves him feeling hollow, and as though he has accomplished all there is. This yearning triggers his desire to “master” the holiday of Christmas. Jack’s absolute mastery of Halloween does not translate directly to Christmas however, and his efforts are unappreciated. Rather than simply presenting Jack with a new challenge, his foray into Christmas recontextualizes Jack’s experience with Halloween. Rather than finding his calling in another profession, he instead learns more about himself, allowing him to feel more fulfilled upon returning to his own life.
