Gravity Falls is about the titular town itself, Gravity Falls. While the show focuses on the adventures of the two main characters, Dipper and Mabel, it could be argued that the actual main character is the town of Gravity Falls itself.

Many fictional worlds are claimed to be the true main characters of the work in which they appear. Harry Potter’s Hogwarts, or Fallout: New Vegas’s New Vegas are both examples of worlds being so fully developed and appreciated that they are considered to be main characters. Gravity Falls is a town with so much character and mystery, with so many sources of inspiration, that it develops its own personality. It is claimed by the show’s creators that the town’s “weirdness” is not the result of the many creatures that reside there. Rather, the truth is the inverse of that assumption. The town of Gravity Falls has an inherent and incomprehensible “weirdness” that attracts creatures as minor as gnomes, to fourth dimensional gods like Bill Cipher. It is this eternal mystery that makes Gravity Falls such a compelling world and character.
