Smoker (One Piece)
One Piece has hundreds of potential characters to discuss, the first of which is Smoker. He is currently a Marine vice-admiral in the world of One Piece, and has formed a sort of rivalry with the protagonist, pirate Monkey D. Luffy. Smoker has eaten the "plume-plume fruit," which enables him to turn his body into smoke.
Smoker is quintessentially a good man. While he is imposing and threatening, he is shown to have a good heart and strong sense of justice. In his introduction, he is shown to give a little girl money for ice cream, after she spills her cone all over his pants. It is evident that Smoker has good moral values, and likely joined the marines because he thought they embodied those values. However, as the series progresses, Smoker becomes more and more aware of the corruption that is spread throughout the Marines. When saved by Luffy himself, he discovers that not all pirates are disposable human filth, like he once assumed. Rather, some carry the same values he does. As he appears throughout the story, Smoker is faced with more realities that show the cracks in the Marine's justice system. However, Smoker never becomes disenchanted by the Marines and their shortcomings. Unlike Kuzan, a former admiral who left due to what he viewed as poor management, Smoker remains. While not explicitly stated, it is possible that Smoker climbs the Marine ranks in order to save the entire organization, and sculpt them into what they need to be: the justice system which the world deserves.
